Richard Schodde


Managing Director of MinEx Consulting

Richard Schodde has over 30 years experience in a wide variety of project analysis and strategic planning roles within the international resources industry including 15 years at WMC (in its Business Development Group and as Strategic Planning Manager for the Exploration Division) and more recently, 4 years at BHP Billiton (as Minerals Economist in their Global Exploration Team). In 2008 he founded MinEx Consulting to provide strategic and economic advice to mining and exploration companies.

From his work Richard has developed a deep understanding of the drivers behind mineral exploration and the associated economic and business risks of mining. This underpins his work in helping companies identify how to make money out of exploration.

Richard holds a First Class Honours Degree in Materials Engineering and a MBA. Along the way he has become experienced in geology. He serves on a number of industry committees including the AusIMM and the Melbourne Mining Club. In 2009 he was appointed an Adjunct Professor at the School of Earth Sciences at UWA (Centre for Exploration Targeting) and is a member of SEG, SME and PDAC. He has also on the Editorial Board for the Journal for Resources Policy - an international journal devoted to minerals policy and economics, aimed at economists and decision-makers in academia, government and industry Richard has published several papers on exploration performance and is internationally recognized by his peers as a world leader in mineral economics. John Sykes

Strategist at MinEx Consulting

John is a minerals industry strategist, economist, and geologist. He will start work at MinEx Consulting in early 2018.

He is currently finishing a PhD entitled "Using scenario planning to improve the integration of geological, technical, economic, environmental and socio-political factors in minerals exploration management and strategy" at the Centre for Exploration Targeting, The University of Western Australia.

John co-authors the Strictly Boardroom column on MiningNews.net, which was recently compiled into a book. He has published many peer-reviewed journal and conference papers and presentations about mineral industry economics, strategy, scenario planning, forecasting, history, policy, sustainability and competitiveness in the gold, copper, iron ore, tin, rare earths, critical and minor metals markets. Several of his papers have won awards for their quality.

He also teaches MBA courses on the 'Strategic Management of Resource Companies' and 'Strategic Analysis and Consulting' at the UWA Business School, on 'Strategic Planning and Practice' for the Australian Institute of Management (WA) and 'Mineral Economics for Geologists' for the Centre for Exploration Targeting. He previously taught 'Mineral Economics and Policy' for the International Mining for Development Centre and a course on the rare earth elements for Terrapinn Training.

Prior to studying his PhD, John founded Greenfields Research, a consultancy which specialises in the analysis of exploration and mining. Before this he was a consultant in copper mining and smelting for CRU Group in London. He has consulted on projects across the base, precious and specialty metals sectors, on most continents, particularly with junior exploration companies.

John is a Fellow of the Geological Society of London, an Associate Fellow of the Australian Institute of Management (WA), an Associate of the Royal School of Mines, a Member of the Institute of Materials, Minerals and Mining, the Australasian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy, and the Australian Institute of Geoscientists. He is also a Chartered Scientist.

He also holds a Masters with Honours in Geology from Imperial College London.

John is based in Perth, Australia.
